Welcome Back

By Site Admin On October 17, 2018 · Add Comment

Welcome back to Friends of Cornish Hill for 2019.  We have already had a busy start to the year and have some upcoming events which we are sure you will be interested in.

CHILLOUT WALK –  Saturday March 9th, 10:00 – midday, and hosted on behalf of the Friends by Tanya Loos.  BYO drink bottle, wear sturdy shoes and sunscreen, meet at the Lookout for a 10:00 start, well behaved dogs on leads welcome.  Always useful to let Margie know if you are planning to come in case there is a last minute change and we can notify you.

“ Last year’s walk attracted over 50 people”

GETTING RID OF THE WEEDS

Interesting things have been happening on Cornish Hill as the Friends as we explore different ways of eradicating weeds and reducing our use of herbicides. Thanks to our neighbour Vasko, 8 gorgeous goats have been devouring their way through broom, blackberry, willow and other woody weeds. And just around the corner, mighty Ivon the not so terrible has been wielding the brush cutter to remove the infestations of blackberries along the creek.

At the other end of the Reserve, at the picnic area, Kieran Foley of Steam Weeds Eco Weed Management has been using high pressure steam on the weeds growing through the gravel near the Interpretation sign.

Removal of flowering gorse heads and cutting and painting willow suckers have taken place in the past. Big thanks to everyone who has taken part in this exercise. We can’t do this sort of thing without the help of our volunteers, We are looking forward to hosting a Conservation Volunteers team later in April and you might have guessed!  Weed eradication will be the name of the game then as well.

Late last year we engaged a team from Aus Eco Solutions to complete a lot of weed removal above the picnic table.  The initial brush cutting took place in November and significant rainfalls in December encouraged regrowth of the gorse.   A return trip from Aus Eco in late January gave us a great opportunity to spray the regrowth.

We are grateful for the support of Landcare Victoria who have funded our weed eradication program.

Meet The Fochers

Understanding about living with wildlife as your neighbours can be challenging as those who attended the MEET THE FOCHERS event on Saturday 13th October found out. Blue Tongue lizards, Echidnas, Snakes, Frogs, Wallabies and a myriad of tiny insects all call Cornish Hill home, and the FOCHERS were keen to find out how they could be sure they were on the right track as they continue to restore habitat along the creek corridor. With Wild Life consultant Ian Temby, Lindall Kidd from Birdlife Australia, Janene Trickey from DELWP all on board, those who attended were well rewarded with some great advice about striking a balance. And to top it off, with wasp season just around the corner, Friends member Jan shared the secrets of making wasp traps and Gayle Osborne ably explained the VEAC process which has been a keen and sometimes vexing topic of conversation in the community.

A great place for a walk

By Site Admin On June 6, 2018 · Add Comment

June 6th 2018

Seems that the mild weather has brought out all the walkers. Today we hosted Malmsbury walking group. Jenny Taylor has been a member of the Friends for some time and was originally on the Committee of Management when it was first formed back in the 1990’s. Pine trees blocking the view of Lake Daylesford were removed today. What a difference!

Planting with Daylesford Secondary College

May 29th 2018

We were able to take full advantage of some help with planting on Cornish Hill just before the season drew to a close. A group of DSC students who take part in a Hands on Learning program planted another 50+ trees and shrubs and also learnt how to propagate seeds and cuttings. None of this could take place without the extraordinary help from our volunteers Anthony Jowett, Jan Thompson, Andrew Percy Sam Pearson, Ivon Watt, Rotary member Colin Metcalfe, and the able and affable Tania Dunn from DSC. Our aim is to welcome the same students back towards the end of the year when we hope to be planting out the cuttings and seedlings propagated at this session. Thanks to all those who took part and to whoever ordered the weather! Sunny in more ways than one!

Wesley College Clunes on the Hill!

By Site Admin On June 6, 2018 · Add Comment

24th May 2018

Christmas came early on Cornish Hill  when 11 students from Wesley College Clunes campus lead by staff members Jonathan and Zoe planted over 50 trees and hand cut out and painted broom seedlings, dock and thistles. We are indeed grateful to have the support of these students and staff, not to mention our volunteers Barbara Webb, Anthony Jowett, Andrew Percy, Sam Pearson, Gael Shannon, Miriam Porter and Ivon Watt who bent over backwards to make sure the event was a success. The last photo sums it up! Exhaust ed after a hard day’s work. We are grateful for their help and looking forward to catching up with our DSC friends in the Hands on Learning program on Tuesday 29th when another 50 trees are to be planted. A big hands up to you all for such a great effort.

Conservation Volunteers

The age old adage really is true, many hands do make light work; and that’s never more true than when a team of 10 Conservation Volunteers from Bendigo arrived on the 19th of April to give us a lending hand.
It was a case of BYO brush-cutters, walking tracks were cleared and gorse, broom and blackberry and re-emerging woody weed seedlings got the chop. Goodbye to all the willow suckers, these were hand removed by cutting then painting. Walkers on the Hill will be pleased to know that 5 previously undiscovered wasp nests were treated as well. After the rain at the weekend, the weather on the day was perfect, blue sky and a light breeze made it a pleasure to be spending time with such a keen and happy bunch of volunteers. And an extra bonus was that there was enough time to set up a site for a future planting with the Daylesford Secondary College. Thanks to team leader Daryl and his inspirational team!

Fauna and Flora Walk with Tanya Loos

By Site Admin On March 20, 2018 · Add Comment

How lucky we all were to have the very talented Tanya Loos take locals and visitors alike on a Fauna and Flora walk on Cornish Hill on Saturday 10th March. Billed as part of the program for the ChillOut Festival, we couldn’t be more pleased at the huge turnout we got – 45 people! These were made up of FOCH Committee members, members, locals, interstate and even overseas visitors. Our overseas visitors were from Canada, Belgium, New Zealand and Croatia – just amazing!

We learnt so much in just two hours – we looked at the pupae of the Imperial Hairstreak Butterflies being protected by ants who in turn receive a sugary feed from them, we checked out half eaten pine cones by Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos,  we saw Whirligig Beetles, a Cherry Ballart tree, tree ferns and visited the picnic area at Smith’s Creek. But wait for it – the highlight of the day, was finding Koala poo! Yes, we definitely have Koala’s in Cornish Hill! We even picked them up, opened them and sniffed them! It’s not as bad as it sounds, honestly – they don’t eat meat!

Anyway, the walk was a roaring success and one that we will definitely repeat next year for the 22nd ChillOut Festival. And talks are afoot to do a few more during the year. Watch this space!

And thanks Tanya, Margie, Jan and all who attended!
